SEBUYAU: Construction of the coastal bunds at Block F in Kampung Baru Sebuyau is progressing well.

Infrastructure and Ports Development Assistant Minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi revealed that although the coastal bunds which covered up to the Kampung Giat Mara areas were not completed yet, they managed to control the king tide for the past several days.

“The king tide was about 6.2 to 6.3 metres high from Oct 8 to 10 but it was under control,” he said in a Facebook post yesterday (Oct 11).

Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said that once the coastal bunds were completed to a width of four metres, the high tide would be better controlled.

“God willing, the village areas will be in a safer and more comfortable state,” he said.

The first phase construction of the coastal bunds commenced in October last year with two areas — Block A in Kampung Sebangan and Block F in Kampung Baru Sebuyau.

Funded by the Sarawak government, Block A construction in Kampung Sebangan spans 4.3km and costs about RM53.5 million while  Block F construction in Kampung Baru costs RM34.5 million and will span 4.3km.

Once completed, these projects will resolve the problem of saltwater intrusion into the village areas.
