SIBU: A container lorry laden with recycled materials caught fire after part of its tyres exploded near the Paradom roundabout last night (Apr 15).

The incident happened around 8.30pm when the lorry, driven by a 34-year-old driver, was travelling from Kuching to Miri.

However, he managed to bring the lorry to a safe stop after realising the burst tyres.

Sibu Zone 4 Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) chief Andy Alie said firemen from Sibu Central station were deployed to the scene after receiving an emergency call around 8.40pm.

On arrival, they confirmed that the fire involved six tyres on the right side of the lorry and promptly performed the extinguishing deed.

“Fortunately, the fire did not cause total destruction to the container lorry, only the tyres.

“No injuries or casualties were reported as the driver managed to get to safety,” he said.

After ensuring that the situation was safe, the team wrapped up the operation at 9.55pm and departed back to the station.
