KUCHING: The public must continue to play a vital role in crime prevention by channeling any information in criminal activities to the police.

Kuching police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah said that index crime cases in the district last year (2022), decreased by 11 per cent compared to the figure in the previous year (2021), thanks to public cooperation.

A total of 831 index crime cases were recorded last year compared to the previous year’s figure of 933, showing a decrease of 102 cases.

“In general, only some of the (crime) categories increased – vehicle thefts, robbery and trespassing.

“This requires a joint effort to combat and prevent such crimes as well as increase the confidence of the public in the police.

“Hence, it is important for the community to continue to be our eyes and ears to prevent any form of crime, especially vehicle thefts,” he said during the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD) monthly assembly, today (Jan 26).

Ahsmon stressed that the police are concerned about the increase in vehicle theft cases in Kuching, as such a crime has a huge impact on the community.

Since vehicles are the community’s main means of transportation the public must continue cooperating with the police so that the crime can be curbed and the community is able to carry out its daily activities safely, he said.

“When the community provides information to the police, we can act and prevent crimes much faster.

“This year, the police are committed to curbing the three crime categories mentioned,” he said.

Ahsmon also called on every relevant member of the community to remain diligent in providing the best service to the people.

Also present was Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa.
