KUCHING: Kuching South City Council mayor has called all Kuching residents to be steadfast in observing the new norms to liberate the nation during the Covid-19 pandemic while preserving unity and nurturing the spirit of patriotism.

Datuk Wee Hong Seng said observing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) would equate to expressing one’s love for the country, especially in celebrating the National day and Malaysia day this year.

“This year, we celebrate the National Day and Malaysia Day in a very different mood compared to previous years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“It is our duty as responsible citizens to continue observing the SOPs, set by the government, strictly, particularly on maintaining a high-level of hygiene, physical distancing, wearing face masks in public areas and avoiding crowded areas,” he said when officiating at the Kuching district-level Merdeka@Komuniti programme at MBKS Auditorium here today.

On ‘Malaysia Prihatin’, the theme for National Day and Malaysia Day this year, Wee said it was meaningful, adding that it is important for the public to preserve unity and pride to fight the virus.

“The winning formula is premised upon close cooperation between Malaysians, and our ‘Prihatin’ government.

“Government, authorities, healthcare and economic institutions have been working round the clock to end the pandemic. Many unprecedented initiatives benefiting the rakyat were announced.

“Whilst no country is spared from the negative impact caused by the health crisis, our ‘Prihatin’ government was instrumental in alleviating the impact on our people.”

Wee also reminded the public to dutifully check-in at public places via tracing apps such as MySejahtera, Qmmunity and CovidTrace digital apps to ensure efficient tracing of potential Covid19 individuals from spreading the virus.
