KUCHING: The Kuching City South Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng today urged the people to continue wearing face masks despite the lifting of face masks in public places and indoors by the Ministry of Health recently.

“After the announcement by the Ministry of Health, I would like to confirm what I have also said last week, that we have put up a notice at our building premises here advising anyone coming to the council – including staff members – or those coming to pay their assessments, etc, that they must wear face masks,” he said.

Wee was asked to comment on about the face masks’ rule at the MBKS’ hawker centers and marketplace under its jurisdiction as well as at its building.

“So far, we received a positive response from the public that they would like to continue to wear face mask.

“Of course, it’s not necessary anymore but we have put up the notice so that the public is not only protecting themselves but also others and their family members,” he said to reporters after announcing the winners for the just concluded Kuching Festival’s lucky draw competition here today.

Wee added that overall, the response from the public is encouraging and he reiterated that the ruling will stay until the COVID-19 situation gets better, hopefully, within the next two to three months.

“For the time being, the situation is still uncertain but we are pleased to say that majority of the people have complied as they are also aware of the dangers of the virus.

“After all, there is nothing difficult to wear a face mask and we would like to urge the hawker operators at the hawker centers and in the market places as well as those patronising our building premises to continue to be vigilant and to wear face masks,”he said.

Meanwhile, a total of 12, 255 people have registered for the lucky draw during the 24-day festival.

The winners received motorcycles ranging from the first prize: a WM Extreme 150 cc motorcycle which was won by Brandon Tay Kai Ren; second prize: a WM ES 125 cc motorcycle won by Jee Min Hwa and third prize winner was Tay Mui Seah who won a WM 110 cc motorcycle.
