KUCHING: Some 3,100 crates of contraband beer worth RM589,000 were confiscated by the 11th Battalion General Operations Force (GOF) on Friday.

Sarawak GOF commander SAC Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said acting on information and intelligence gathered, raids were conducted at two separate locations.

“In the first location, the team raided a house in Batu Kitang at 9.30am and found 1,000 crates of Kingway beer and 600 crates of Estrella beer worth RM304,000.

“A local man, 44, who is believed to be the lorry driver, was also apprehended,” he stated.

The second raid at 1pm took place in a house in Batu Kawa and the team found 1,100 crates of Kingway beer and 400 crates of Estrella beer worth RM285,000.

A lorry worth RM70,000 was also seized in the first raid, rounding up the confiscated items to be worth RM659,000.

Khaw added that the suspect and goods will be handed over to the Padawan and Batu Kawa police district headquarters for further action.

The case will be investigated under Section 135 (1) (d) of the Customs Act 1967.

“If convicted, the accused can be fined not more than 10 times the amount of goods, or imprisonment of not more than five years,” he said.
