MIRI: The Customs Department on Wednesday seized 3,834.53 litres of various brands of beer worth RM29,705 with unpaid duties and taxes valued at RM119,287.

The total estimated value of the contrabands including duties and taxes is RM148,993.

Sarawak Customs director Herman Shah Abdullah said the alcoholic beverages were seized during a raid conducted at a premises in Jalan Merbau Centrepoint Phase I.

The operation was carried out by enforcement teams from Miri and Bintulu.

“The alcoholic beverages were meant for local distribution,” he said in a statement.

All seized items were found kept inside a storage room of the premises.

Two men were also detained to facilitate investigation under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 which provides for a fine 10 times the total value of the goods or RM100,000, or between six months and five years’ jail, or both, if convicted.
