Contraband worth RM2.3 million seized

KUCHING: Two men aged 35 and 55 were arrested by a marine police patrol unit for smuggling RM2.3 million worth of contraband.

Marine Police Region 5 Kuching commander ACP Zulfikar Mohd Ghazali stated in a statement the arrest was made yesterday at 3.30am.

“Based on information from Ops Kontraban, a team from the Marine Intelligence Unit (URM) was on patrol by the roadside about one km from the Simunjan junction.

“During the patrol, the team detained and inspected the two men who were behind two lorries,” said the commander.

Both drivers did not have valid documents from the Malaysia Royal Customs Department (JKDM) relating to ownership of the goods on the lorries.

The items seized from the lorries were 3,510 boxes of liquors of various brands, 30 cigarette boxes and 150 white cigarette boxes.

Zulfikar added that the goods were handed over to criminal investigation officer from Simunjan district police for further action.
