KUCHING: The General Operations Force (GOF) seized contraband cigarettes and alcohols worth over RM2,236,700 and arrested a local man in an operation codenamed ‘Ops Libas’ on Tuesday.

GOF Brigade commander SAC Mancha Ata said his men conducted three raids on two residential houses and a shophouse suspected of storing the contrabands.

The team seized a total of 10,070 cartons containing 2,014,000 cigarettes and 4,104 clove cigarette cartons containing 801,440 cigarettes – along with 302 boxes of beer of various brands and 422 boxes of liquor.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967 and the seized items were handed over to the Miri district police headquarters (IPD) for further action.

Mancha said the GOF recorded a total of 148 cases involving 408 arrests, comprising 180 locals and 228 illegal immigrants, with total seizure valued at over RM35,570,700 in operations carried out from the beginning of the year until yesterday.

In the past two weeks alone, the force had successfully seized almost RM5 million worth of smuggled items.
