MIRI: Marine police seized cigarettes and alcoholic beverages worth RM44,388 including unpaid duties in a raid on a premises in Bekenu on Thursday.

Sarawak Marine Police commander ACP Shamsol Kassim in a statement today said, the seized items comprised illicit cigarettes with unpaid duty worth RM22,690 and contraband alcohol worth RM21,698.

He said at 2.30pm, a 23 year-old Indonesian man believed to be the premises’ caretaker was detained during the operation dubbed ‘Ops Landai’.

During the operation, Shamsol’s men raided the premises, where they uncovered 28,012 sticks of cigarettes, 1,800 cans of beer, 648 bottles of beer and 29 bottles of liquor.

“All seized items have no valid document from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department related to the goods,” he said.

The case is being investigated under the Customs Act 1967.
