SIBU: The local authority (LA) is urged to ensure that contractors comply with the standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the local government at the construction site.

Bukit Assek Assemblyman Joseph Chieng Jin Ek said the pollution caused by contractors at the construction site has affected the quality of life of residents living nearby.

“Residents have the right to live there, but now they don’t dare to dry clothes outside and don’t allow children to play outside because of the dusty and sandy air quality,” he said when met by reporters recently.

Earlier, Chieng in his Facebook post was seen visiting the construction site of the housing estate in Bukit Penyau in order to get a better insight on the issue.

“According to the regulations, ponds and water sprinklers must be installed at construction sites to clean the wheels of trucks before they go out on the road.

“But unfortunately, the contractor did not do that. I think we need to hold a dialogue session and brief the contractor what they need to do, what are the procedures they need to follow and give them time to install what is necessary,” he said.

Chieng said he had sent feedback to the local authorities and action had been taken, but the issue had not yet been resolved.

“I hope the local authorities and relevant agencies can take this matter seriously. It is time for us to improve the condition of the construction site,” he said.
