KUCHING: The downstream of Batang Rajang river will experience a significant rise in water levels for four weeks due to a controlled reservoir release through its spillway starting today (July 12).
In a Sarawak Rivers Board notice dated on Thursday (July 9), Sarawak Energy Berhad announced that it will carry out the release from the Bakun reservoir from July 12 until August 8.
“The purpose of the operation is to bring down the reservoir level to a comfortable zone. During the spilling, there will be a significant rise in water level downstream of the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam,” it said.
It also said that all parties concerned — ship owners, masters, agents, river users and general public — are advised to take precautions to prevent untoward incidents.
“All parties at the downstream of the Bakun Hydroelectric Dam, the public and shipping communities are advised to give their full cooperation and take safety measures when navigating or using the river,” it said.
