KUCHING: State’s Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Ministry will continue to support the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (Macma) Sarawak to break negative perception of converts.

Its minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the effort is necessary to create awareness of the mistaken belief that a person would lose their cultural identity upon embracing Islam.

“The converts have shown that even though they are now Muslims, their family ties still exist. The relationship between them and their parents are still the same. This helps to change perception,” she said in a statement issued today.

She also praised Macma’s commitment to help the converts to learn to adapt the teaching of Islam as their new way of life.

“I am very glad to see it is still in existence. It is very difficult to see an NGO (non-governmental organisation), especially religious based like Macma, sustain unless they have a very committed leader and a good team of committee.

“I would like to congratulate Macma Sarawak for being able to change the perceptions of the general public when someone changes their religion,” she added.
