KUCHING: Collaborative effort is needed in order to come out with proper plans on how to expedite and save 64 delayed or ‘sick’ water supply projects, stressed Datuk Julaihi Narawi.

The Utility and Telecommunication Minister reminded that it is the ministry’s duty to ensure that all ‘sick’ projects should be revived and implemented smoothly in the near future.

“I know that the movement control order is one of the main reasons but (as of now), we must strive to get these projects going so that we can achieve 100 per cent water supply coverage in the state by 2025,” he said during the ministry’s gathering at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching on Friday (Feb 11).

For the record, out of 306 water supply projects, which were given an allocation of RM4 billion for development, 183 have been completed while 59 are progressing smoothly.

“As an entity or corporate body (that is responsible) to transform the water supply industry in the state, (we should) improve our service delivery to the rakyat by providing them with an efficient and effective utility system and adopting a more proactive approach in the supervision and holistic management of water resource,” he said.

Meanwhile, Julaihi said under the Digitalisation of Water Supply Programme, the Sarawak Rural Water Supply Department is planning to create an integrated multi-information platform, namely, the Water Supply Command Centre.

“This centre is to effectively monitor, manage and address various problems encountered in the water supply infrastructure and network systems, through non revenue water monitoring and riding on the latest technology.

“With the completion of this said project later, I believe many of the water supply issues could be resolved faster,” he said.
