Cops bust seven for cockfighting

SRI AMAN: Seven locals were arrested for their alleged involvement in a cockfighting session held within an oil palm plantation along Jalan Melugu Skim here last Sunday (Oct 22).

Acting on information, a team from the Sri Aman Criminal Investigation Division (CID) carried out an operation codenamed ‘Ops Dadu Khas’ at the scene around 3.20 pm.

Sri Aman police chief DSP Mathew Manggie said among those arrested was an 82-year-old man.

“A group of men, who were at the cockfighting arena, were taken by surprise when they realised the presence of the police.

“Seven of them aged between 37 and 82, were arrested on the spot,” he said.

Also seized during the raid were several items and equipment used to carry out the illegal activity.

Mathew said the case is being investigated under Section 73(1)(g) of the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance 1999, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000, or a prison term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.
