KUCHING: The district’s Crime Investigation Division (CID) cut off power supply to five premises believed to be involved in unlicensed gambling activities on Monday (Aug 24).

District police chief ACP Awang Din Awang Gani said that the operations was carried out by a CID police team along with Sarawak Energy Berhad (Sesco) personnel from 9am to 12.30pm.

The action was taken against premises comprising grocery stores that were found to be conducting unlicensed gambling activities.

“Pursuant to Section 21A of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, the police may request a power cut if there is a reasonable reason,” he said in a statement.

He stressed that warnings were given to relevant operators not to carry out any illegal gambling activities as the police would take action as per the Common Gaming House Act 1953 and would enforce the Crime Prevention Act 1959 on those involved.

ACP Awang Din stated that from Aug 22 to 24, the Kuching CID team successfully conducted five raids on the said premises and investigations were conducted under Section 4 (1) (c) of the Common Gaming House Act 1953, which carries a fine of RM5,000 to RM50,000 and imprisonment for up to three years if convicted.
