KUCHING: Police are on the hunt for a man who allegedly beat up another man with a rubber pipe and a wooden plank last Sunday.

The alleged incident that happened in front of a supermarket in Bintawa around 4.30pm was caught on camera and went viral on social media.

In the video, the 29-year-old victim was accused by the suspect for stealing goods at the scene. It then led to the suspect beating the victim with two objects.

Following the incident, the victim suffered injuries on his head, bruises on his back, swollen arms and legs, injuries on his left leg and a wound on his left elbow. The victim was treated at Sarawak General Hospital (SGH).

Acting Kuching police chief Supt Merbin Lisa who confirmed the case, said they have identified the suspect in the video and are searching for him to assist in the investigation.

“Any members of the public who witnessed the incident are welcome to come forward to assist in the investigation. They can also contact the crime investigating officer Insp Mohd Safuan at 013-2037908.

“An investigation paper had been opened under Section 324 of the Penal Code for causing injuries with weapons, which carries a jail term up to 10 years or fine or whipping,” he said.

He pointed out that the police are taking this case seriously where such outrageous actions can be life threatening.

Hence, the public are strongly advised not to take matters into their own hands but to instead contact the police for help or hand over the individual claimed to have committed a crime to the police for further action.
