Cops round up 12 locals for cockfighting

SRI AMAN: Twelve men have been arrested by the police for taking part in an illegal cockfight at the Batu Besai Ili oil palm plantation here last Saturday (June 3).

Acting Sri Aman police chief, DSP Zuriawati Zainal Abidin, said that the raid, codenamed ‘Op Dadu,’ was carried out after receiving a tip-off from the public at approximately 3 pm.

Upon arriving at the scene, a team of officers from the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Narcotics Crime Investigation Division (NCID) discovered that the suspects were actively engaged in the illicit activity.

According to her, as soon as they realised the presence of the police, the suspects attempted to flee to a nearby forest. However, their escape was short-lived as the police swiftly apprehended the suspects, whose ages range from 37 to 77.

Additionally, the authorities seized various items and equipment that were being used for the cockfighting session.

Zuriawati said that the case is currently under investigation in accordance with Section 3(1) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1962. If convicted, the offenders could face a fine of up to RM500 or imprisonment for a maximum of three years.

The public is strongly urged to comply with the instructions of the authorities and to refrain from engaging in any illegal activities.
