Cops seek FB user for fake posts

PADAWAN: Police are tracking down a Facebook user that goes by the name ‘Jenifer Lawrence’ for allegedly spreading false information regarding the Covid-19 cases in Sarawak last Friday (Jan 15).

The user had uploaded a social media post which said “321 positive cases in Sarawak today” in a Facebook group named ‘Sarawak Covid-19 Awareness Group’. The post which has since been deleted was reportedly shared in a Whatsapp group called Covid-19 Malaysia.

District police chief Supt Aidil Bolhassan who confirmed the matter, said they received a report on the Facebook user at 7.15pm Friday night.

“The complainant lodged the report after realising that the social media post with fake information was causing panic among the public.

“Investigations found that the Facebook user had uploaded the false statement in Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. However, the posts was deleted at 6pm by the user,” he said.

According to the complainant, the Facebook user often uploaded posts relating to Covid-19 issues in Sarawak.

The case is being investigated under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code for causing fear and public panic. It will also be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988.
