Cops shut down mahjong game, eight arrested

MUKAH: Eight locals, including a woman, were arrested for engaging in a mahjong session in a premises here yesterday (Mar 17).

Mukah police chief DSP Muhamad Rizal Alias said the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) conducted surveillance before raiding the upper floor of the premises around 4 pm.

Two men and a woman were playing mahjong while, five other men were observing the game.

“All the suspects, aged between 43 and 63, were taken to the district police headquarters (IPD) for investigation.

“The police also seized cash amounting to RM2,342, three dice, 112 mahjong tiles, two tables and eight chairs,” he added.

Rizal said the case is being investigated under Section 6(1) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953, which carries a fine of up to RM5,000 or a jail term of up to six months or both, upon conviction.

In light of this, the public is encouraged to report any gambling activities in their areas to enable law enforcement to take appropriate action.
