KUCHING: Like it or not most people have a skewed opinion of the men in blue.

Why? Because they stop you on the road, check your car, ask for your driving licence and issue summonses, and people don’t like receiving summonses even when they know they are in the wrong.

Many think a “good” policeman would wave them off with a warning, while a “bad” one would simply issue you with a summons without bothering to look you in the eye despite your plea.

Because of that summons we have very little good to say of the men in blue.

But of course, it is a fallacy, because the truth is policemen are as human as every one of us.

And like every one of us, they, too, feel for their surroundings, which is why we heard of cops knocking on doors to make sure residents weren’t glued to their TVs and leaving doors unlocked.

There are also tales of cops helping to save pets from certain deadly situations.

We really don’t lack this kind of cops in our midst as proven by a team of Bau policemen yesterday.

Sergeant Benjamin, Corporal Muh Ali and Corporal Fauzi, who were doing their rounds, saw a woman and her son struggling to change a flat tyre in vain at 2pm at KM12, Bau-Kuching Road.

Realising that the woman needed help they stopped and changed the tyre for her in the blazing hot sun.

For the woman and her son, they will be remembering these cops for their kindness for a long, long time.

A proud Bau police chief DSP Poge Nyaon said it was what he had always expected of his men — to help people in trouble while carrying out their routine duties.

“As for the police, assisting people in their line of duty would endear them to the public who would then have confidence in the law enforcers to take care of law and order,” he said.
