KUCHING: Students in Henry Gurney School, Puncak Borneo are urged to seize the second chance given to them, turn over a new leaf, and be the best version of themselves.

Fatimah (centre) chats with the students.

Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said, even with a second chance, they could become better citizens.

“You will be able to focus in here, unlike having distractions when you were out there.

“This is the turning point for you that you have to capitalise on and always do your best in the field that you are interested in.

“We are in a different world right now where you have to find your own income and this is where innovation and creativity come in so be the best, do the best and I wish you all the best,” she said during her visit to the school yesterday.

Her visit was in conjunction with the school’s community wellbeing programme organised by the Social Development Council (MPS) in collaboration with the Sarawak Prisons Department.

Fatimah said her ministry has collaborated with the Sarawak Dyslexia Association to provide students in Henry Gurney School, Puncak Borneo who have not yet achieved literacy in reading, writing and counting, for thwem to acquire the 3M skills.

“Hopefully, the children who participate in this literacy programme will succeed in gaining new knowledge and skills to face the challenges of the information world.

“Dyslexia is a disability but it is an obstacle a person can overcome and I believe through reading, which is the bridge to knowledge, the root of the problem can be tackled and addressed.

“So, when they leave here later and move on with their life outside, I hope that people can focus on and look at their abilities and their potentials, instead of their disabilities and imperfection from the past,” she said.
