KUCHING: The Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) organised a two-day workshop to brainstorm on the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) beginning Wednesday (Feb 16).

Experts and lecturers on SDG were invited to give details and inputs on the 17 goals and 169 sub-goals.

“The SDG was initiated and adopted by all nations in the world in 2015 at the UN with the aim of bringing sustainable development, ensuring human peace and security as well as making the world safe and clean.

“These are all very noble goals with good intentions, but as we know they are very challenging and difficult to implement and achieve. For instance, the issue on how to reduce global warming is highly contentious with nations still arguing and battling on it,” MPKS chairman Datuk Peter Minos said in a statement yesterday (Feb 17).

Minos said MPKS would like local councils nationwide to focus on three key areas, namely best waste management and practice, urban traffic and flooding issues, as well as seek solutions.

“The local authorities must get the full support of the stakeholders, namely the government and people. The experts had repeatedly reminded to never take the people, especially the local residents, for granted.

“This reminder is something that MPKS takes full note of as we would like to make Kota Samarahan liveable and a happy place to live in,” he added.
