KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) welcomes the government’s decision to extend the movement control order (MCO) until May 12.

“Given that Covid-19 deaths and infections are still a daily occurrence, there is no other choice except to extend the MCO as there is no vaccine available yet,” chairman Datuk Peter Minos said.

He said the decision to extend the MCO was not an easy one as it was difficult on the government, the community and various sectors – but it had to be taken for the safety of the nation and her people.

He pointed out that Kota Samarahan was classified a Covid-19 red zone.

“Naturally, we are very concerned and this is why we are repeatedly calling on the people here to fully comply with the MCO with no excuses, in order to keep safe,” he said.

He advised those who felt they may be at risk of having Covid-19 not to take any chances and instead head to Dewan Suarah Kota Samarahan for screening.

“MPKS has been conducting disinfection works on markets and other public places. We are working together with the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba),” he said.

He added that upon request, MPKS also disinfected private locations such as care centres in the area.

“Whatever MPKS can do, we will do it, in enforcing the MCO and supporting all the government’s moves in getting rid of this deadly virus,” said Minos.

Meanwhile, he said that MPKS was still waiting for face masks from the relevant authorities.

“We are enquiring and asking for the masks, as we are able and willing to help with the distribution. It is our duty to assist and we will do our part,” he said.
