KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) warned yesterday that it would go all out against defaulting contractors including blacklisting them.

The move is part of its initiatives to improve and upgrade its services in areas under its jurisdiction this year, said its chairman Datuk Peter Minos.

“We will monitor, and where proven and necessary, weed out the defaulting contractors.

“If all else fails and we have concrete facts and proofs about their wrongdoings, we will blacklist them,” he stressed.

Minos said MPKS had been holding regular meetings with its contractors to remind them of their contractual terms and conditions.

They had also been duly informed that the council would strictly monitor their performance to ensure that they fully comply with the terms and conditions of their contracts, he added.

“We are fed-up with the attitude of recalcitrant and difficult contractors who do shoddy and disappointing work, giving excuses after excuses for sub-standard work and performances,” Minos lamented after chairing MPKS’ full council meeting on Monday.

He said MPKS took public complaints and grouses very seriously whether they are about scavenging, drain and street cleaning, desludging or grass-cutting.

“The public pay rates and they deserve the best from the council. As such, we do not want contractors to fail us all”, he said.

Minos said that was why MPKS did not want to spend too much time running after and supervising the contractors, adding that “we want to spend more time to carry out development work”.

MPKS sought to live up to its motto of “clean, green, safe and beautiful”, he said.

Minos said, among other matters, MPKS aspired to develop Samarahan as a place of knowledge, fine residence, good living and ample creative opportunities.
