KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg agrees that Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) should have a new smart and green office building.

“As we want Kuching to be a smart city, you need to have smart and green technology buildings. Therefore, I support that MPP should have a new office building,” he said during the 24th anniversary celebration of Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) and the launch of The Last Ring Ladies Mural at Kota Padawan Mall on Monday (Dec 14).

“Let us work together… Also give us a big win because the state election has to take place next year.

“Our term will be expiring soon. It should have been held earlier but due to Covid-19, and as a caring government, we postponed the election,” he said.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said after 25 years of municipality and with the rapid growth of the MPP areas, the present office was now too small to accommodate the council’s staff and assets.

“We require a bigger office building to enable MPP to improve its services to the people,” he said.

Lo said the proposed new office building would have the concept of an office in a park to blend well and to reflect Padawan’s abundant nature.

“The land surrounding our new MPP office will be a very well-maintained park to be enjoyed by the general public.

“This is in line with the state government’s efforts to make Kuching a smart city,” he said.

Lo added the new office would also be a smart and environmentally friendly building equipped with the latest technology to track and to monitor services provided by the council.

MPP was established in 1956 and started operating in 1957. In 1996, 40 years after its formation, MPP, then known as the Kuching Rural District Council (KRDC), was upgraded to a municipal council.
