Council ready to assist consumers statewide

KUCHING: The National Consumer Action Council (MTPN) has expanded its branches across Sarawak in order to assist consumers as well as to protect the rights of the consumers.

MTPN secretary-general Masrudi Abdul Rahman said that the establishment of the council here is also to solve problems between the consumers and traders.

“We are also a bridge between the community, consumers, businesses as well as departments or agencies in resolving issues related goods and services.

“In addition to that, we also organised various programmes such as welfare programmes, programmes of consumer affairs as well as seminars and workshop,” he said.

He said this during a media conference at MTPN Sarawak office at Oscar Commercial Center Building, Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli here yesterday.

Nationwide, there are 94 branches except in Perlis and Kelantan.

He added that district branches in Sarawak would be set up for the convenience of consumers to lodge complaints, especially those far from the urban areas.

The council, a non-governmental body (NGO), which was established on October 7 last year will have other branches in Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Bau and Padawan.

At the same media conference, chairman for MTPN Kuala Lumpur Abdul Malik Jamaran hoped that the council’s presence in Sarawak would give positive impact to the community in terms of protecting the rights of consumers.

On Wednesday (April 12) and yesterday the MTPN paid courtesy calls on Kuching South City Council(MBKS) and Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) Sarawak in order to assist and strengthen the rights of Sarawakians as consumers of goods and services.

Abdul Malik also said through the courtesy calls, various programmes with various agencies and community would be jointly organised as well as to introduce the council to the people.

“We hope that upcoming programmes will have a positive impact on the community in Sarawak and Malaysians in general.

“We are very pleased to be accepted to establish MTPN Sarawak and we are confident that the council here will be a great team in helping and monitoring the programmes as well as continuing to provide solutions to consumers,” he added.
