MIRI: Local councillors have been reminded of their responsibility and role in improving services to the people.

“You are here as a representative of my ministry and the State government and not by political party nominations to serve people in your respective areas,” said Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government at the swearing-in ceremony of 32 councillors of Miri City Council (MCC), yesterday.

He said councillors make a huge difference to the quality of life of people and how local issues are dealt with.

“All of you are playing important roles in MCC … your coverage is bigger than Singapore, this is how important your role is as city councillors,” he added.

He called on all councillors to work and move together akin to four wheels of a car to ensure all policies are planned in line with the Sarawak government’s policies.

“In the State government structure, we are the front line … all councillors have a crucial role to play,” he pointed out.

Thus, Dr Sim urged councillors to be always available and their handphones reachable to serve the people better.
