KUCHING: The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is committed in its fight against plastic waste as evidenced by its pioneering efforts in waste management.

MBKS mayor Datuk James Chan said the city council had initiated the ‘No plastic’ campaign since last year in its efforts towards a plastic free society.

“Through the campaign, we remind and educate the general public that there are alternatives to plastic bags,” he said in an exclusive interview with the New Sarawak Tribune yesterday.

He also mentioned that MBKS have also printed usable shopping bags with the wording ‘No plastic’ and distributed them to the public in hopes that it would remind the people to care for the environment.

“The message printed on the bags should remind the people to minimise the use of plastic bags, hopefully, we can educate the public even through such simple reminder.

“We know this habit cannot miraculously change overnight. Our hope is for those who really care about our environment that plastic wastes would cause more harm on the environment.

“I also hope that the general public would also help to spread this information to their friends and families about our environmental awareness initiatives,” he added.

Chan also said that another way to help safeguard the environment and city was for everyone to take part actively in the 4Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle) as a way of life.

He noted that MBKS’ innovative initiatives in waste management issues were highly respected in Sarawak.

He cited as an example; the waste management system implemented at the Stutong Market here where disposable waste is converted into bio-fertiliser.

This initiative has not only helped the environment and kept the city clean but the bio-fertiliser produced also contributed to the landscaping of the city.
