KUCHING: The Kuching Teochew Association here recently witnessed the registration of marriage of a couple that was delayed due to the movement control order (MCO).

Sarawak Teochew Association second vice-president Sim Kiang Chiok said the couple had finally managed to sign their marriage registration on June 10.

Sim, who is also the association’s assistant registrar of marriage, said the couple was the first to have registered their marriage during the recovery movement control order (RMCO) period.

“Marriage registration is now allowed; however, any ceremony or mass gathering is not permitted yet,” he told New Sarawak Tribune on Sunday.

He said only the couple together with their witnesses was allowed during the marriage registration and the whole process would not take more than 40 minutes.

“Besides that, couples must also strictly adhere to the standard operating procedure (SOP) by observing the one-metre social distancing, using face masks and hand sanitisers,” he said.

On June 7, Senior Minister (Security Cluster) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said non-Muslim couples whose marriage registration was affected by the MCO would be given until July 31 to resolve the matter.
