MUKAH: The movement control order (MCO) has provided time and opportunity for some people to do something beneficial for themselves and others.

They either engage in their hobbies or other activities that could help in generating extra income for themselves and families.

Housewife Madlin Martin, 43, and her husband Plawin Kimli, 53, are among those who took advantage of the long holiday, due the MCO to engage in something they are passionate about — cooking lemang.

Glutinous rice-based lemang which is wrapped in banana leaf, is cooked in a bamboo over a fire generated from wood or charcoal in an open space.

The couple from Kampung Tellian Daya (Tellian Tengah) have been preparing lemang for many years, initially for own consumption and later for sale.

According to Madlin, they used to prepare lemang in the village here and in Bintulu for own consumption, including for Gawai Dayak and Christmas as well as Aidilfitri celebrations.

She said the MCO and now the CMCO had provided them time an opportunity to prepare lemang.

“We began preparing lemang sometime in the middle of this month, coinciding with the fasting month of Ramadan.

“Between 40-60 units were produced daily and all were sold out at a price of RM10 and above per a unit depending on the size,” she told New Sarawak Tribune today.

She added they also prepared 200 units ordered by customers who wanted lemang for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration recently.

Madlin said after the fasting month was over, they prepared between 30 and 40 units daily, and all were sold out.

A Malaysian traditional delicacy, lemang can be eaten with Kaya paste, chicken or beef curry or chicken or beef rendang either during normal time or festive celebrations.
