KUCHING: A special training course will be organised by the  Society for Rights of Indigenous Peoples of Sarawak (SCRIPS) to educate the local community on how to record down the oral history of their people within the longhouses and villages.

SCRIPS, which functions as a civil society for Sarawak natives, will hold the course here this weekend after having successfully held one in Miri recently.

It’s secretary general Michael Jok said the SCRIPS’ Training Consultancy is organising a ‘Training Course on the Documentation of Indigenous Community Oral History’ at the Grand Supreme Hotel, here on Dec 18.

“The participants will be taught on both the oral and written history of their people, and then we show them the process on how to document one’s own community oral history.

“This documentation is very  important and meaningful to all the indigenous communities in Sarawak as there is not much history written about each community until the present day.

“The course is a kind of DIY (Do It Yourself) training and the documentation could be legally recognised in future,” he said in a press statement.

The registration fee is RM200 per participant which includes food and drinks, course notes plus a certificate of attendance.

Those who wish to join can contact the organisers, Awang Ahmad at 010 9756596 and Michael Jok (019 8583907).
