KUCHING: Sarawak recorded 607 new cases and four fatalities today, the highest in a single day in Malaysia, pushing the national total to 1,767 for the same day.

The new cases also took the total number of infections in the country to 363,940 since the pandemic began.

The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said 130 of these cases were reported in Bintulu District, Kuching (106), Sibu (106), Mukah (52), Miri (49), Kapit (33), Meradong (29), Saratok (23), Samarahan (14), Sarikei (14), Betong (8), Bukit Mabong (8), Selangau (8), Subis (8), Dalat (5), Kanowit (3), Matu (3), Julau (2), Serian (2), Sri Aman (2), Asajaya (1), and Beluru (1).

“These bring the total number of cases to 20,959,” the committee said today.

They attributed the high number of cases to the 61 cases reported at the Sarawak Police Training Centre (Pulapol).

“They are placed in a training centre where their condition is under control,” they said.

They said that of the 607 cases reported, 41 persons showed signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection during screening.

They added that 372 cases detected were individuals who had been directed to stay at quarantine centres.

Of the 607 cases, they said 363 were individuals who had contact with positive Covid-19 cases, 174 were persons linked to existing active clusters, 41 were screenings by symptomatic individuals at health facilities, 20 were other screenings at health facilities, and nine cases involved individuals who had returned from other states within Malaysia (categorised as Import B cases).

“A total of 189 new cases have recovered and were discharged on Tuesday,” said SDMC.

Of these, 66 were from Sarikei Hospital and the Low-Risk Treatment Centre (PKRC) under it, Bintulu Hospital (45), Sibu Hospital and the PKRC under it (31), Miri Hospital (24), Sarawak General Hospital (9), PKRC under Kapit Hospital (7), Serian PKRC (4), Lawas PKRC (1), Mukah PKRC (1), and Betong PKRC (1).

“These bring the number of recovered and discharged cases thus far to 16,639 or 79.39 percent of the total number of cases in Sarawak,” they said.

There are still 4,129 cases being isolated and treated at PKRCs and hospital wards.

“A total of 608 persons-under-investigation (PUIs) have been reported with none awaiting laboratory test results,” they said.
