KOTA SAMARAHAN: Covid-19 vaccination for the homeless will be conducted in nine divisions in Sarawak from Aug 8, says Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah.

“This is a collaboration between the ministry and other agencies such as the Resident’s Office, Divisional Health Office, Divisional Social Welfare Office, police, Immigration Department and local authorities,” she explained during a visit to Desa Bina Diri here, where a vaccination programme was being held, on Monday (July 19).

Before the start of the homeless programme, Fatimah said the ministry and relevant agencies would first carry out an observation operation from July 18 to Aug 1.

“This is to get the details of the homeless people and also manage the requirements and needs of the programme.”

She revealed that Sarawak had identified 221 active homeless persons eligible for vaccination located throughout the state.

“These include 92 homeless individuals in Kuching, 30 in Sibu, 66 in Miri, 21 in Bintulu, five in Sarikei, six in Kapit and one in Sri Aman.”

While pointing out Sarawak’s initiative to ensure all eligible individuals are vaccinated, Fatimah said the administering of a single-dose vaccine was the best option (for the homeless) given that they were often on the move.

“Therefore, to prevent anyone from failing to receive their second dose, all parties are of the view that a single-dose vaccine is most suitable for them.”
