SEMATAN: A special event called ‘Kraf Kembara Borneo’ is scheduled for this October to improve the handicraft industry in Sarawak and Sabah.

Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan said that ‘Kraf Kembara Borneo’ aims to showcase the unique handicrafts made by local artisans.

The goal is to spread awareness and sell these crafts not only within Sarawak and Sabah but also beyond their borders.

Khairul also said that another ‘Kraf Kembara’ event will take place next year, but it will be held in West Malaysia.

“We started with Sarawak and Sabah because these two states are larger in terms of land area. This is why we need a different approach for them compared to West Malaysia.” Khairul said this during a press conference after officiating Pesta Sematan 2023 yesterday (August 11).

“By focusing on handicrafts, we can also increase the country’s overall income. That’s why the ministry considers this so important,” he added.

In line with this effort, Khairul shared that Kraftangan Malaysia has partnered with Royal Selangor by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

This partnership will enable them to learn from Royal Selangor’s strengths and weaknesses and gain valuable insights.

Khairul pointed out that Royal Selangor is already renowned worldwide, and it’s time to nurture the skills of local handicraft artists.

Also present was Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan.
