TANJUNG MANIS: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) here detained a fishing boat and five crew members for violating the terms of their license on Monday (May 20).

MMEA Tanjung Manis director Commander Gilbert Tinggak Numpang said that the detention took place around 10.20 pm during ‘Op Permai’ and ‘Op Tiris 3.0’ patrols.

The Class C vessel, operated by five local crew members including its skipper, was spotted fishing in Kabong waters at about six nautical miles west of Pantai Alit.

“Further inspections found that the crew violated the conditions of their licence by carrying out trawling activities less than 10 nautical miles from the coast.

“The crew, aged between 25 and 42, along with the vessel, were then escorted to the Tanjung Manis Passenger Terminal Jetty for further investigations under the Fisheries Act 1985,” he said.

Gilbert advised the maritime community to comply with the laws before carrying out any activities at sea and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
