Crewman feared drowned, two others injured in barge incident

KUCHING: A crewman is feared drowned following a rope incident onboard a barge which left two others injured near Hock Seng Lee wharf, Jalan Setia Raja, here this morning (Feb 8).

The Sarawak River incident involved two locals and a foreigner who were tying the rope of the barge when it suddenly snapped.

The impact injured both local crew members, leaving one of them with a broken leg.

Meanwhile, the foreign crew member identified as Kyaw Khaint, 28, is feared to have drowned.

Firemen from Tabuan Jaya and Padungan stations were deployed to the scene after they were alerted around 9.10am.

On arrival, they administered first aid to the injured locals, aged 35 and 37, before taking them to the hospital for further treatment.

A search and rescue (SAR) operation has been launched to locate the missing victim.
