KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) is urging the Ministry of Education (MoE) to respond urgently to the need to fill the position of teachers across Sarawak.

The union believes that the shortage of teachers in Sarawak has reached a critical level.

Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) president Ahmad Malie said many teachers haD voiced out their plight and disappointment over similar issue in their respective schools.

“Due to this reason, it has become a great inconvenience which affects the school administration in terms of subject allocation as well as other tasks for teachers.

“Therefore, in the interest of students’ learning, KGBS pleads to MoE to consider its appeal to increase the number of teachers statewide,” he told a press conference at KGBS office in Jalan Matang here today.

He highlighted that with the current situation, KGBS welcomed any teachers from across the country.

He explained that the number of teachers does not have to fulfil the 90:10 ratio of local teachers to those from outside the state.

“If we were to choose teachers based on their region, we fear that this issue of inadequate teachers will persist.

“The 90:10 teacher ratio phenomenon can only be implemented when the current issue on shortage of teachers has been settled,” he said.

However, the union encourages young Sarawakian graduates who are still looking for job opportunities to fill in the vacant positions as backup teachers.
