KUCHING: The criticism levelled against Sarawak-born national diver Datuk Pandelela Rinong Pamg by a national daily was uncalled for said Bung Bratak Heritage Association (BBHA) president Datuk Peter Minos.

In expressing his disappointment over a news report that had portrayed the athlete in an unfavourable light, Minos said the Pandelela has made the nation proud numerous times and has to be recognised for it.

“She is still the Malaysian diving queen and the person who had brought big respect and honour to the nation.

“Like the rest of us humans, sportsmen and sportswomen have their ups and downs. They cannot be on top forever or all the time.

“We from BBHA of Bau, of which Pandelela and family are members, feel very unhappy and displeased,” he said today.

Minos also pointed out that everyone should not forget about the good name and prestige that Pandelela brought to Sarawak, Malaysia including Bidayuh in and outside BBHA.

“What did the offending reporters or newspaper bring us?” he questioned.

“The critics themselves are never perfect. So, just be fair and responsible for what you say of others.

“Pandelela has guts. She has strength and determination. She will recover and shine again. Just mark my word. A bung bratak man or woman does not give up when faced with adversity,” he stressed.

Previously, the Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah also castigated a national Malay daily’s news headline on the national diving queen’s performance during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

He was referring to the Berita Harian report entitled ‘Pandelela pulang tangan kosong’ (Pandelela returns empty-handed) as the Sarawakian diver had failed to win a gold medal in Birmingham.

The news has also received backlash from the public, especially the people of Sarawak who is also expressed their dissatisfaction over the headline that were deemed as discouraging the athlete.

Berita Harian has since changed the headline of its online report to ‘Pandelela sudah beri terbaik’ (Pandelela gave her best).
