KOTA KINABALU: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) has urged the government to increase the individual income tax relief rate from RM9,000 to RM18,000 due to current economic uncertainties.

Cuepacs president Datuk Azih Muda hoped that the matter would be given attention under Budget 2020 to reduce the people’s burden amid the rising cost of living.

“Due to the high cost of living, in addition to the uncertain economic environment, we hope the individual tax relief rate can be increased. Similarly, the tax relief for housewives should be increased from RM2,000 to RM5,000.

“The rate is too old, and we see that this tax relief rate is not in line with the country’s current economic situation. I am confident that with an increase in tax relief, civil servants will be able to restructure household spending, and our economy can be more prosperous and competitive,” he added.

Speaking to reporters after launching Sabah Cuepacs’ Triennial Delegates Conference here yesterday, Azih said Cuepacs is also hoping for good news for all government servants to get a minimum one-month bonus under the 2020 Budget.

Meanwhile, he also congratulated Datuk Mohd Khairul Adib Abd Rahman on his appointment as the new Public Service Department (PSD) director-general effective Oct 1. – Bernama
