KUCHING: Sarawak needs to uphold the uniqueness of its homemade food to maintain the title of Kuching being a Creative City of Gastronomy in the next five years.

In stating this, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng pointed out that in Sarawak, there are over 20 ethnic groups, each of whom can offer their own home cooked meals.

“Because of this diversity, we (MBKS) work hard to highlight Sarawak food.

“I believe that for every food there is, they have their own uniqueness in them. Aside from its presentation and taste, food is often linked with culture.

“This link is important as this is what makes it truly different,” he said during the press conference on the ‘Borneo Culinary Adventures – Sarawak’ television programme at GSC City One Megamall on Sunday (June 5).

Furthermore, Wee added that in Sarawak, there are a variety of  ingredients that could be used to make these unique foods.

Taking the ‘gula apong’ ice cream as an example, he stated that no one before had thought that the ‘gula apong’ could be used as an ingredient in ice cream.

“This is where creativity is involved and that is what we need to keep up with.
