KUCHING: The Customs Department here has crippled a drug syndicate following the seizure of 3,034g of syabu worth RM151,700 on Friday.

Customs state director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha said following the bust, a 45-year-old man was arrested in front of a courier office at 2pm.

“It is believed that the syndicate had used the courier services to acquire the drug supply.

“The department is aware of the tactics used and often conducts risk assessment on courier packages,” she said in a statement issued yesterday.

She added that the suspect had been remanded for seven days until March 2 to facilitate the investigations.

“The case will be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction,” she stressed.

According to Halimah, this is the first and biggest bust made by the department so far this year. Last year, the department’s Narcotics Branch seized various types of illicit drugs worth RM1.7million.
