MIRI: The Miri district Customs Department on Thursday confiscated 84,464 sticks of cigarettes and 1,452.71 litres of beer valued at RM33,903.19 with unpaid duties worth at RM92,409.60 in two separate raids held in Batu Niah.

The first raid was carried out in a bistro while the second on a stationary van parked nearby the bistro, one hour after the first raid was conducted.

Inside the bistro, they found 39,744 sticks of cigarettes and 1,083.07 litres of beers worth RM11,102.03.

According to Sarawak Customs director Datuk Sharifah Halimah Tuanku Taha in a statement, the van was not locked when they approached it.

Upon further checking, the team discovered the contraband cigarettes and beer valued at RM22,801.16 in the van.

She added that the first raid was held at 3.35pm, before they proceeded to the van.

The case is being investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Custom Act 1967 for possession of goods not approved by Customs.
