Cycling as a beneficial pastime

KUCHING: Cycling is a beneficial pastime for general health and mental wellbeing, said cycling enthusiasts.

In a random poll by New Sarawak Tribune on Saturday (Sept 18), cyclists said that it also enabled them to expand their network while keeping fit.

Some also said cycling is a form of low-impact workout which suits older folk.

Cyclist Tracy Rona Robert encouraged the public to cycle as a pastime activity as it was a form of exercise that could help people to unwind.

“I release my stress by taking part in sports, so I find cycling therapeutic when I first got into it,” she said.

The 31-year-old added that cycling helped her keep her physical and mental health stable.

“I get to explore nature and enjoy the scenery while cycling. So not only does it benefit my physical fitness, it also helps me to relax and boost my mood when I enjoy what nature has to offer,” she said.

She added that cycling led her to meet more people with similar interests and gained new experiences.

“My group started with only six people but we have met several other cyclists and had many memorable moments together,” she said.

Another cyclist Efendi Montel said that cycling as a hobby is a great activity to enhance and keeping one’s physical health in check.

“There are plenty of people my age who suffer from heart diseases and I find cycling gets my heart pumping and ensuring my body stays active,” the 58-year-old said.

Efendi also added that cycling allowed him to make new friends in the cycling community as they meet up and cycle together.

Meanwhile, 54-year-old Mohd Sarbini Bujang said that cycling is considered as a low impact sport and that it suits older folk.

“For older people like me with joint problems, cycling is a great sport to try because it puts less stress or pressure on the body,” he said.

He added that although it is a low-impact exercise, cycling was effective in improving his stamina when compared to other activities he had previously attempted.

“At my age, it is difficult to build stamina but through cycling, I managed to increase my stamina and maintain it,” he said.
