KUCHING: DAP leaders here have pledged to reward the next batch of students who scored outstanding results in STPM out of their own pockets.

DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the rewards will be funded by him and Bandar Kuching incumbent Dr Kelvin Yii.

He said this during the DAP’s STPM Reward Giving Ceremony to 45 recipients who scored well in STPM, held at DAP Sarawak Headquarters here last night (Oct 18).

“The allocated fund for our service centre is almost depleted after handing out the rewards today for the second batch of students who should be proud of themselves for achieving great results in STPM under circumstances we have never experienced before which is studying online during the pandemic.

“We were waiting for the next allocation fund to be banked in to us before handing it out to the third batch of students but unfortunately we did not expect the government to dissolve so soon which also affects the funding from coming in,” he disclosed.

Chong added that he personally believes in the law of good karma where doing something good will eventually bring you something positive in return.

“Thus, Kelvin and I have decided to use our own money to reward the third batch of students since the allocation fund for our centre is almost depleted.

“We will be doing another reward giving ceremony in the next few days because we have to do it fast before the nomination starts or else it can be seen as bribing,” he added.
