KUCHING: Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak strongly believes that with Pakatan Harapan (PH) as the backbone of the present government, the main principles of good governance, transparency and accountability will continue to be the main agenda.

Its chairman, who is also the Stampin MP, Chong Chieng Jen said with that DAP Sarawak would make tangible efforts to move away from the old days of corruption, cronyism and lack of accountability.

“DAP Sarawak State Committee today had a meeting to discuss in depth on the current political scenario in Malaysia and our role and position as a party to push forth the principles of good governance and multi-culturism for the benefit of all Malaysians.

“We understand that in the current situation especially in view of upcoming economic challenges and the rise of religious conservatism, the national interest of political stability and a stronger multi-cultural government rise above all personal interest and positions.

“We thank all our supporters, who through their votes helped strengthen PH both in Malaysia and within Sarawak which made us the dominant block in the current federal government set-up,“ he said at a press conference held at DAP headquarters here, on Sunday.

He added through those principles, all elected DAP Sarawak MPs would continue to play their role as the backbenchers of the federal government and voice out for the people of Sarawak.

“We will do our best to provide the necessary check and balance in Parliament and to ensure that the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance are complied with by the ministries and government agencies of this unity government.

“Within Sarawak itself, we will continue to play our role as a constructive opposition to uphold the principle of accountability and good governance within our democratic system for the benefit of Sarawakians,” he said.

He added that it was in the interest of Sarawakians to have a strong counterbalance and accountability within the state.

“And we as DAP Sarawak will continue to play that role to strengthen democracy and good governance in Sarawak,” Chong said.
