MIRI: Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary Senator Alan Ling voiced his support towards a statement from Umno supreme council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi regarding federal Plantation Industries and Commodity Minister Datuk Dr Mohd Khairuddin Aman Razali.

Recently, Puad called for Khairuddin to be charged in court for a Covid-19-related offence.

Khairuddin was slapped with a RM1,000 compound when it was discovered that he flouted the mandatory home quarantine rule after returning from a trip to Turkey on July 7.

“I think that Khairuddin is setting a bad example to the community because the fine does not commensurate with the offense committed, as others have been fined heavier than that so this is very unfair,” added Ling on Monday.

He also took note of the criticism from various sections of society on this matter and argued that the fine was too light as there were a handful of foreign ministers who resigned for violating the SOP.

Earlier, Ling donated hand sanitisers to the North Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) to be used by members of the association while on duty in an effort to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

The donation was handed over to NSJA president Andy Jong at Ling’s office witnessed by other members.

According to Ling, this contribution is one of the initiatives to express his appreciation to the journalists who have worked hard regardless of time and place, especially during the movement control order (MCO) period.

“Journalists are also on the frontlines and are committed in channelling accurate and updated information to Malaysians throughout the MCO period since last March,” said Ling.
