Chong explains the situation of the dilapidated building

KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has been urged to swiftly address the deteriorating condition of semi-industrial shops along Jalan Datuk Tawi Sli, 3 1/2 mile here.

Sarawak Democratic Action Party (DAP) chairman Chong Chieng Jen stressed the urgency of the situation, noting that 11 shops are in a state of disrepair, with some experiencing cracks and collapsed floors, posing a threat to both tenants and the public.

“All shop owners of Lot 1603 to 1611 Block 218 KNLD have engaged engineering consultants to conduct a Building Integrity Report.

“Through the assessment on last December, it has been found that certain structures or parts of the building are cracked and deemed unsafe for use,” he said during a press conference at Sarawak DAP headquarters here today.

The Stampin MP said MPP is a government agency responsible for exercising powers under the Sarawak Building Ordinance (SBO) 1994.

He lamented that while a building integrity report was submitted to the council back in February, a final decision from the MPP is still pending.

“After several processes including reporting to the MPP, until now we have yet to receive any feedback.

“According to that, the MPP is indeed empowered under the SBO 1994 including issuing notices to building owners either in the case of repair work or instructions to demolish buildings.

“We hope the council can assist in resolving this matter,” he stressed.
