KUCHING: Will the 12th Sarawak election be held earlier? Perhaps, sometime at the end of the year?

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) vice-president Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah took a wild guess that the polls could either be held by end of this year, earlier or on the first half of next year.

He went on to say it was not feasible to have the polls now as it was still too soon.

“But we cannot go very far. Because we know the term of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) will expire middle of next year.

“So by looking at this, it is very easy to calculate also. Well, the exact date of dissolution is based on the Chief Minister as it is his prerogative,” he told New Sarawak Tribune when asked to comment on Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, who hinted that polls would be held earlier, at his office at Baitulmakmur Building (Masja) here, yesterday.

He said Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) leaders or members were not in the know or able to predict when the polls would be held.

“But as you can see, Pakatan Harapan (PH) is also going on the ground now. They even set up MPKKP (Federal Village Community Management Council). All that leads to their preparation for the election.

“There are also more PH leaders suddenly coming over to Sarawak for Chinese New Year recently and some other programmes. They are building up the momentum,” he said.

When asked on how PBB was preparing for the election, Abdul Karim said however big or small the preparation is, the party should not be overly confident.

“This is the state election, we must be fully prepared. But God willing, we will win handsomely with the support of our components in GPS, whether it is PBB, SUPP (Sarawak United People’s Party), PRS (Parti Rakyat Sarawak) or PDP (Progressive Democratic Party).”

Abdul Karim said what is important is that GPS work together to win the election.

“We cannot be resting on our laurel. Wwe must be prepared,” he said.
