Dayaks still in Gawai festive mood

SIBU: Though the Gawai Dayak festival is already entering its second week, the Dayak community here are still holding open houses to welcome visits from relatives and friends.

Moreover, the celebration of Hari Raya Aidilfitiri within the same week has further boosted the festive mood of the people.

Several local Iban leaders including a councillor from Sibu Rural District Council Frederick Taip Ledom yesterday held an open house at his residence in Grace Itun longhouse in Salim-Stabau road.

Among the distinguished guests who called on him were former assistant minister Datuk Dr Soon Choon Teck; chairman of Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Dudong branch Wong Ching Yong; chairman of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Dudong branch Teo Boon Siew; secretary of Kanowit District Council Anthony Luta and chairman of Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu Chambai Lindong.

The guests were feted to local delicacies ranging from traditional food like “ayam pansuh” to “rendang”.

The open house was also attended by people from various races which manifested the close relationship and friendship in our multi-racial society.
